It”s a scary place I”m about to enter. I”m always nervous about the quality of what I will produce, if anything.
6/15/00
I”ve started something. I don”t know what. I need more sleep.
6/16/00
Started a new intro, which I like. Now, I”m off to help my father-in-law put the cut hay into the hayloft.
Returning, I powered significantly through. It”s interesting to me how I can keep my manic state of mind and put it into neutral when I run into a compositional ”wall”. I then do some menial work on the farm, like cutting a field of grass, and come back to my writing refreshed.
I”m now four minutes in.

Cleaned up what has become the exposition and started the antecedent. I need to clear my head.
And as I push on to finish the 1st movement, I”ve cleared at least a ton of rock and dirt off a wall in ruin to rise again.
Well, hey! I finished the 1st movement.

I can”t say what makes it come out. I”m just grateful that I have the ability to hear it!
This countryside is so beautiful.
My God. I just wrote the 2nd movement.
6/20/00
Just finished two arduous days of writing out the first two movements. Hopefully, I”ll still have some energy left to start the 3rd. I know it is reggae and will be in a straight up 4/4.
6/21/00
I did manage to start something last night/ This reggae should be fun and full of ebullience.
6/24/00
This 3rd movement is a very difficult birth, in contrast to the first two movement”s ease of composition, it”s going to be a bear to compose, let alone, write out.
6/26/00
It was a very difficult birth but I think it”s finished. I need to sleep on it to see if it is.
6/28/00
Started the 4th movement, a real barnburner. The exposition is blistering!
6/29/00
Tweaked and finished the exposition and then started the antecedent. Also spent five hours painting a fence.
I think if for nothing else, Beethoven”s sheer tenacity is the single most inspirational force for me. I may very well dedicate this quartet to his memory.
FINISHED!!!
